Infertility Q & A

What causes infertility?

Infertility doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t get pregnant, rather, it just means that you might need a little medical intervention to help. Some of the most common causes of infertility are described below.

Infertility in women

If you’re struggling to get pregnant or stay pregnant, you might have a problem with your ovulation cycle. For instance, if you have irregular periods, you may not be able to pinpoint when you’re ovulating, and this can make it harder to get pregnant. Infertility in women can also stem from:

  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI)
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Endometrial polyps

Infertility in men

Sometimes the struggle with infertility may be linked to your partner. Infertility in men can be caused by:

  • Varicocele, or enlarged veins on the testicles
  • Chronic illness, including cystic fibrosis
  • Too few sperm production
  • Testicular injury

In some cases, infertility is linked to both partners, which is why sometimes it’s best for both of you to have an evaluation.

When should I see a doctor for infertility?

Ideally, you should schedule a preventive exam at the office of Gul A. Zikria, MD, before you try to conceive, just to ensure you’re healthy and to intervene if you have any underlying medical concerns. Dr. Zikria especially wants to see you soon if you’re:

  • Unable to get pregnant after one year
  • Unable to conceive after six months if you’re age 35 or over
  • Able to successfully get pregnant, but unable to stay pregnant

Dr. Zikria works diligently to find out what’s causing your infertility and helps you and your partner find solutions to help you conceive.

Can I get treatment for infertility?

Absolutely. Dr. Zikria provides all kinds of modern infertility screenings, including sonograms, semen analysis, and minimally invasive laparoscopic diagnostic surgery, to find the source of your infertility. Once he better understands why you’re having difficulty getting or staying pregnant, he can provide infertility treatment, which may include:

  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
  • Ovulation medications
  • Infertility corrective surgeries
  • Endometriosis or fibroid treatment
