Using PRP to Enhance the Appearance of Your Skin

Using PRP to Enhance the Appearance of Your Skin

Your body is constantly renewing itself. This process goes on behind the scenes, around the clock as your skin sheds old cells as new tissue forms. Many facial procedures help to exfoliate those dying cells that can dullen the appearance of your skin.

Treatments that attempt to stimulate new growth, such as chemical peels and dermabrasions, often have long recovery times, since top layers are aggressively removed to make way for new growth. That may be fine if you can take the weeks to recover while enduring the accompanying discomfort.

Gul A. Zikria, MD, FACOG suggests platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy to his patients seeking fresher, younger-looking skin. Using concentrated samples of your own blood, growth hormones are isolated and added back to your body where they can assist the natural renewal process, providing a resource boost that adds to your glow.

The power of platelets

Your blood carries a variety of nutrients through your body that are vital to virtually every process that contributes to your life. Platelets are perhaps best-known for their clotting ability when you have a cut or a scrape. Apply a bit of pressure on the wound and in minutes, platelets begin to form a matrix that starts to seal the cut and begins the healing process. Within days or weeks, there’s little evidence your skin was ever damaged.

Beyond clotting, platelets also carry growth factor hormones. Hormones act as the body’s messenger system, sending chemical signals that tell body systems what to do. Growth factors direct the healing process, including the creation of new tissue cells. This can be particularly helpful in tissue such as tendons or cartilage, areas that generally don’t have a high blood supply.

PRP and your skin

Your skin uses growth factor hormones naturally as part of its renewal process or when you have a facial treatment that stimulates skin growth. Treatments such as microneedling create deliberate, controlled, and even damage to your skin to trigger a response from your body that includes platelet-borne growth hormones as part of the process.

However, natural healing is limited to the resources carried by your blood. That means only so many platelets can reach a healing site in a given time. PRP gives your body a boost by adding more “free” resources.

The PRP process

Starting with a sample of your own blood similar to the amount taken for routine testing purposes, the sample is centrifuged to separate it into individual components. Platelets gather in the middle of solution, above the heavier red blood cells but beneath the lighter plasma.

The platelet layer is extracted and combined with a small amount of plasma, then the resulting PRP is reinjected into your body where needed. This can be into the skin of your face, a process called a blood facial or a “vampire” facial. The extra healing factors in the PRP promote faster rejuvenation while supporting the healing process.

The net result is healthier skin that minimizes the appearance of lines and wrinkles. PRP treatments are an excellent addition to a multi-process facial regimen, complementing Botox® and dermal filler injections and many other typical aesthetic treatments.
